PROJECT INFORMATION

Continuing our partnership with AMSG (Australian Maritime Systems Group), in May of 2020 IPCQ started the internal lead paint removal of the heritage listed Cape Byron Lighthouse. With extreme care and patience for this brilliant and iconic lighthouse, IPCQ delivered the project in just 2 months.

Cape Byron Lighthouse now gleams brightly with the refurbishment which will ensure the lighthouse remains a part of the Byron Bay coastline long into the future.

SCOPE OF WORKS

As the 2021 IALA Heritage Lighthouse of the Year, Cape Byron Lighthouse is a special symbol of the outstanding heritage, architecture, social significance and conservation of lighthouses in Australia and around the world.

Cape Byron Lighthouse was opened in 1901 and is located at Byron Bay in New South Wales. The lighthouse is technically important for its early concrete block construction, for being the first Australian installation of a mercury float mechanism pedestal and for being the only Henry-Lepaute optic in Australia.

Due to the significance of the structure, IPCQ was brought onboard as the preferred supplier. Our long standing relationship with AMSG and our excellence previous experience working on heritage listed lighthouses, provided AMSG the confidence that IPCQ would deliver the right result.

All internal coating surfaces of the lighthouse lantern room contained lead and therefore strict lead controls had to be implemented during all surface preparation works. To keep the importance of the history alive, IPCQ ensured all historical elements of the lighthouse were keep safe and intact. This included the Copper, Brass and Bronze surfaces, delicate glass pieces and internal timber features.

The approved coating system was a 3 coat system which contained a surface tolerant two pack epoxy primer, two pack epoxy intermediate coat and two pack gloss polyurethane top coat. IPCQ used International Paints to complete this painting specification on the Byron Bay Lighthouse.
